He then later appears after Johnny killed Bob he was at a party in Buck's house in the bedroom trying to get some sleep. Cherry promptly throws a Coke at him and he leaves. In the second chapter after they go to the movie's, he attempts to flirt with Cherry. For example, he told Johnny "Now that I'm out (of prison), I'm gonna make it my business to get the guy who did that to your face".ĭally is a tough, friendly and loyal guy who hangs out with Johnny and Ponyboy. He says to Johnny at one point "My old man doesn't give a hang if I'm in jail dead in a car wreck or drunk in the gutter," He is mean to many people such as Cherry, but it is shown he cares for his gang and treats them like family. Dallas was also treated poorly by his father which contributed to his toughness. He spent three years on the wild side of New York and was arrested at the young age of ten. He also wears a necklace that he had reclaimed from his girlfriend after she cheated on him while he was in jail.ĭallas was hardened from a tough upbringing. After that, he instead wears a dark blue jean jacket. He wears dark blue jeans, and, in the first few minutes of the movie he is featured in, a dark brown leather bomber jacket and a black shirt he gives the jacket to Ponyboy when he comes to Dallas for help after Johnny kills Bob. He had a height of 6'2", and had blazing blue eyes which Ponyboy describes as "cold with all the hatred in the world." However, in the movie, Dally has brown hair and eyes. Dally didn't like haircuts nor hair oil, so his almost white-blonde hair (likely Platinum-Blonde) fell over his forehead in wisps. However, as the story unfolds it becomes clear that people who can be presumed as depraved can develop to sacrifice themselves for their friends and mature to attain redeeming qualities such as loyalty and bravery. In the book, Dallas Winston is said to have an elfish face with high cheekbones, a pointed chin, small, sharp animal teeth, and ears like a lynx. Dally admired Johnny’s soft spoken personality and didn’t want a sentence in jail to harden Johnny like it had hardened himself (89-90).ĭallas Winston grew up poor and disadvantaged and he became what seemed to be a depraved person. If it had been anyone but Johnny who had told him to stop harassing Cherry and Marcia at the Nightly Double, Dally would have flattened him (24). Hidden behind Dally’s rough exterior is a passionate love for Johnny, a love motivated by Dally’s sight of himself in him and an internal desperation for love. Even though he has lived a hard life, Dally demonstrates that he is not selfish when it comes to his friends. Therefore, Dally is admirable in his willingness to sacrifice himself for the well being of his friends he shows an ability to be compassionate for others. In fact, Dally told the police they were bound for Texas (80). After Pony and Johnny went into hiding for the murder of Bob, Dally never revealed where they were. Dally remained calm and never denied the accusation, and even accepted the jail sentence (76). When Two-Bit Matthews, Dally’s friend and a greaser, broke windows in the school building, the police accused and pursued Dally. After the unfortunate incident of Johnny Cade killing a Soc named Bob in order to protect Pony, Dally does not hesitate to guide them into the old church in Windrixville for hiding to escape the police where the greasers lived, and nor does he hesitate to provide them with protection and money, even if it meant going to jail himself. Nonetheless, Dally is thought of as the most noble of and the most loyal to the gang. If something beefed him, he would retaliate (89). In addition, Dally does not have the capacity to resolve conflict. Sadly, Dally cannot love anything- the fight for self preservation during his time in New York and his time in jail has hardened him beyond caring (59). In fact, he goes out of his way to break the law (20).
